Well usually I outline close to 25 tips for the weekend sport, bundle them up into 3 multi bets, all to win nothing as inevitably one out of the 9 legs comes up short. So taking it on board here at WHAB that the fans want more, we are mixing up our last $50 posts (well except for the Captain who is just mixed up). So, instead of the 25 tips I will give you just one with as much conviction as I can.
If you haven't caught the Euro08 fever, then you must be living in a hole. I have to commend the SBS for at least giving us a highlights package each and every game day but is there anything better than the dulcet tones of Martin Tyler calling a game live - 4:30am or not, I don't think so.
Turkey have just progressed after three heart-wrenching come from behind wins, whereas Portugal have stood aside to let an unconvincing Germany side through to another victory and back into favouritism for the title. The question regarding second string sides and what it does for the team is one that Australia must take on board given Portugal's stalled performance against ze Germans. Although the WCQ route for the Australians is a long and arduous one, the impact of a loss on team dynamics can still play a factor, especially when trying to turn the team energy from taking the foot of the gas to motivating them to step it up a notch.
The last two remaining quarter finals pits an unquestionably strong Dutch side against an equally unquestionably strong Dutch coach. Russia, who looked like a different side when putting aside Sweden 2-0 compared to the one that lost to Spain 4-1, will have to find another gear if they are to be considered a threat against the Dutch. The Netherlands, who beat a lacklustre and quite honestly an uninspiring French team, who were deservedly knocked out in the group stages, clinically destroyed an Italian side who weren't allowed to play the kind of football they are known for and was able to field a second string team with depth of quality in the likes of Van Persie and Robben to undo a Romanian side who were growing from game to game and were hot favourite to qualify along with the Dutch going into the final group game. The Dutch have all the cards to play and deserve to be hot favourites to win this one.
Hiddink will have a well oiled Russian side playing a team that he arguably knows more about than his own. But the talent will be against him and if the goals that the Netherlands have scored are anything to go by, so will the football gods. I'm predicting the Dutch to be tested here in a way they are yet to be so in this tournament but they will ultimately come through (paying $1.65) with the final score - 3:1 (paying $13), first to score will be the Dutch (paying $1.60) in Kuyt (paying $9), half/full time to be a draw/Netherlands (paying $4.35) highest scoring half to be the second (at $2.15).
In the other game, the one that will be the one to watch, southern Europe's best are pitted against each other with Spain to take on Italy. I think the wily Italians are going to be too good for the perennial under achievers, Spain. It's not a result I want but can not argue that the Italians know-how in tournaments will get them through over a team that has deserved a lot more silver than it currently boosts. First team to score - Spain (paying $2), and it would have to be in the form of one D. Villa (paying $6.50), half/full time - Spain/Italy (paying $34).
Well I know I said I would give you just one tip and so it must be. I think at $34 you should take a little of the Spain/Italy half/full time action. If you were a cautious man then hedge a little of your outlay on Spain/Draw paying $15. Don't be a douche, catch a little FIFA fever Euro style.

Experiment #1 In Gambling
Was listening to Jason Alexander talking on the radio the other day and it got me thinking that if if doing the opposite worked for George Costanza then let's give it a go here at WHAB!
Nothing gets the blood pumping like women's tennis. Normally I would get on an Aussie underdog but the opposite of that is to get on an ugly Russian favourite in Nadia Petrova. She copped a few branches to the face when she fell from the ugly tree did this one. Very butchy as well, Petrova and Mauresmo would be a match made in heaven. I pity the poor mofo that fancies his chances of a home invasion there. But just looking at some pictures of her, in Seinfeld parlance, she's a "two-face"! On one hand she doesn't look half bad; on the other hand she looks monstrous:

So $20 on Petrova to beat Samantha Stosur in three sets @ $5.
I've given the Rabbitohs a bit of a hard time on this site. So this weekend I'm joining forces with one the greatest actors of our time, one Russell Crowe! Getting on the Rabbitohs to a). beat the Titans $30 @ $2.75 and b). to thump the Titans! By 13+, $10 @ $6.75.
When a horse is involved in a horrible fall the start prior, it makes perfect sense to get on! Street Smart would have no doubt won that race by at least 5 lengths if not for getting a face full of turf. Some desperate tactics/sabotage from other jockeys conspired against her but now she gets her chance for revenge! $10 each way on Street Smart, Race 7 in Brisbane.
With hurdling in the spotlight at the moment and talk of it being banned, I'm getting behind the battlers of the jumps scene. After all, it's the missing link between thoroughbred racing and Equestrian! So having $20 on Pride of Westbury, Melbourne Race 2. Man I love my jumps!

Dollars and Sense
Captain: The Captain's punting form is so bad that he has drafted in some help. I reckon the missus can turn things around for me so let's see what she's got! She tips horses by jockeys sporting purple or horses that she likes the names of...could be a winning strategy against this riff-raff!

Well, my punting has been abysmal for the last fortnight, time to snap out of it!
Sticking to racing generally speaking this week.

Weekend Wrap!
Well, thanks to some hot tipping in the AFL this week, I won the last $100 tipping comp. I picked up something in the realm of +38.40, The Captain is unhappy with his loss by $1.40. That's right. He's my bitch for the week over the meagre sum of $1.40. Hell yeah. JB failed to trouble the scorers this week, flushing his funds down the toilet.
AFL Tipping proved the secret of my success. That baffles me somewhat, as there is not that much that I like about the game. Our good friends at sportingmind discussed a ranking of the four Australian football codes on a recent post. For me, AFL is a distant last. My order looks like this:
Union
Soccer
League
AFL
I love Union having played for many years. I love watching the game, I love playing the game. Soccer recently overtook league in my eyes. It's a harder thing for me to sell to myself at Origin time but typically I would prefer to watch some good soccer than league. Especially with the mediocre commentary that we get. The feature of my top two codes is that they have a valid international focus. Will be getting to heaps of Sydney FC games this year, and stoked to see my team in England promoted to the Premier League on the weekend! Go HULL!
AFL, as I said a distant last. I am sure it would be fun to play... I enjoy watching it when there is no better sport on. It is a clear winner over ANY form of motor racing. It may not be in keeping with the idea of someone who writes a sports blog but motor racing sucks balls. If I have the option of watching a replay of the Simpsons softball episode that I have watched 100+ times or the motor racing, go Simpsons. Ken Griffey and his grossly swollen jaw and all that. I would prefer an uncomfortable chat on the couch with my lady than watching motor racing. It sucks balls. That's all.

And now hits this:

Anyway from the weekend, Hull's move to the top flight has been my favourite piece of sports news. Not too long ago, these guys were playing in div 3. Apache Cat is a superstar of the highest order. If the Titans can go to Leichardt and almost steal the points they are a SERIOUS football team.
A big piece of news from WHAB headquarters: We have been spending a lot of time covering high profile sports. However it occurs to me that we could do some work adopting and covering a team at the grassroots level. If you play in a sporting team - the worse the better - email us at haveabowl@hotmail.com and suggest your team for the WHAB treatment. Coaching Controversies at 8th grade level?? You bet we want to hear it.

Some guy, lets call him Dick Johnson driving a V8 Supercar. It's Bogan and Boring!

Not as "bogany," but equally mindnumbing. Some other guy drives an F1 car. Let's call him David Coulthard. I know it isn't but at least that guy was at least hitting this:

Your Group Financial Review for this week!
Professor:
Not bothering to split my tips into Sport/Racing this week. I have me $100 to play with and I am going to make quite the killing.
Did we mention that JB won last week? His punishment posts for us are a Synchronised Swimming preview (me) and Rhythmic Gymnastics for the Captain. We will be posting those previews when they come up in the alphabetical cycle.
Would love to tell you to back Helideck in the Doomben 10,000 but Weight For Age is a massive test. Let's get one thing very clear though. You should get some $$$ on the Deck for the Stradbroke before the weekend. The Deck will enjoy a 7kg swing on Apache Cat, dropping to 52 kgs and I think will be almost unstoppable at that weight if it holds its form. Any sort of promising run tomorrow will see the Deck shorten into clear favouritism. The $8 is going to be fun while it lasts.
Anyway, on to my last $100. I will have $15 on Reigning to Win for the 10,000.
$20 on the double Hurricanes - Waratahs at $4.31
$20 on the Navy Blues into the Swans at $4.37
$10 on Hawthorn to be pushed by the Demons and win by less than 25 at $5.10
$15 on Cocktail supreme in BR3 - a ridiculous price of $11 at the moment. Can someone please explain to me 1) why the Cocktail is not favourite or at least b) why it is carrying less than Main Vein under handicap conditions.
$10 on Eskimo Dan in BR6
$10 on Helideck
JB:
Would love a bit more time this week to continue the good form proper, as it is will give something for you all to think about as you lay out your hard earned.
$50 Win on Rabbuka in Race 4 at Randwick
$50 Multi with Manly/St George (1.39), Melbourne/Souths >13 (1.92), Geelong/Collingwood (1.21), Hawthorn/Melbourne (1.05 and don't for the love of life think that this will be close, if the final score is close it is because Hawthorn have opted for early showers), Bulldogs/Kangaroos (1.48) total paying $5.02
Captain:
After two unlucky weeks that have completely pissed me off it's time to get back on track!
$35 on the Cat in the Doomben 10,000! That's BR 7 folks.
$15 on Key Bar Nights in BR4.
$20 on the Manly/Melbourne/Crusaders/Waratahs at $3.52.
$20 on Hull City @ 2.30 to win the Championship playoff vs Bristol City.
$10 on San Antonio to beat the L.A Lakers in Game 2 @ $3.30.
Good luck to all, hope you can't close your wallet on Monday morning!

Can't avoid Viewed. I would have a nibble at Nuclear Sky/Musket at $10 or so in this field. So it comes as no surprise that I would Take the horse that beat them both by 4Lengths!!! Strong Choice and Laura's Charm are strong interstaters that can run very well here. Reggie a brilliant roughie.

Rosehill Race 6
$20 win No. 2 Synonym
The Captain
$8 on Heavenly Glow BR 4
$10 on Absolut Glam BR 6
$10 on Viewed BR 7
$14 on Scenic Shot BR 7
$4 each way on Reggie BR 7
The profits will be invested on El Cambio in BR 8. The Captain. Out.
The Prof:
$35 on Viewed BR7
$5 Reggie BR7
$5 Laura's Charm BR
$5 Strong Choice BR
Can't avoid Viewed. I would have a nibble at Nuclear Sky/Musket at $10 or so in this field. So it comes as no surprise that I would Take the horse that beat them both by 4Lengths!!! Strong Choice and Laura's Charm are strong interstaters that can run very well here. Reggie a brilliant roughie.

What to do with my last $50...
Back the Kangaroos in the Centenary test into the Chiefs to beat the Lions in Super 14 into the Roosters to beat the Raiders in the NRL. In what is possibly a WHAB first, though possibly not, we are whacking the whole $50 on at $2.32 to return $116.
Racing tips for this week will be posted by 10am AEST tomorrow as I haven't managed to snaffle a form guide as yet and couldn't even tell you who's racing other than the almighty Apache Cat!

The Professors rushed weekend betting thread!
Sick in bed today, but there is work to be done!
Anyway, a little rushed. $50 for Sports seems best to put on the following:
$20 on the Panthers
$20 on the Waratahs
$10 on Australia to cover the start tonight (17.5) - into the Brumbies - into the Waratahs.
Payout on that is $14.10
For the races!
Two quick bets. $15 Each way on Sir Sensible and $20 the win on Sectagonal.
Best of luck with your punting!

Punting challenge
The lads are in a bit of a pickle regarding who won this weeks tipping comp. Just so we are not confused though, it is not me.
The Captain is convinced that he gets $25 back for his draw in the City Country game (half the payout for $20 @ 2.50) and JB is convinced that we are looking at his $20 being refunded.
Going to the Sportingbet website for guidance, we find that given that no draw option was given, then the payout should be half of the total payout - i.e. The Captain is right. A Refund only applies in line/handicap betting.
As it stands, I gain +6.50, JB + 72.5 and the Captain + 75.5
Sorry JB, you are joining me on punishment post duty this week.

Professor's punting - $50 for the Sydney Cup and $50 for Sports...
A nice easy combined post for my $100 for the weekend. Not a weekend of Sport that I am too fussed on betting on. The League markets don't give me any value to get excited about, nor do the AFL markets.
What to do??
Well, the only sports bet that I like for the weekend is the Waratahs to beat the Bulls away. After the Waratahs strong win at home to the Sharks on the weekend, I think that they can back up in Pretoria. The Tah's don't typically spank any team, so the 1-12 win looks about right. $25 on that @$2.90.
For the rest of my "sports" betting I am looking at the Champagne at Randwick tomorrow. Two runs last weekend caught the eye. Glowlamp and Samantha Miss look like they could turn the tables on Sebring over the 1600m. $15 on Samantha Miss and $10 on the Lamp.
Now to the Sydney Cup. The only horse in this field that I would fancy a few $$ on each way on the first Tuesday in November is Lacey Underall. Looks to run a strong 3200, horse very much on the up... $12 each way.
$10 on Young Centaur to win.. Could be a really good stayer in the making.
$4/$4 on Grand Destiny. This horse is insanely good value.
$2/$3 on Tails of Triomphe. Ditto.
$3 win Lazer Sharp. If he can turn it around, there is some lovely value.
So there you have it... The Professor's best tips for the weekend. I am leaving out No Wine, No Song because I wouldn't be willing to put as much on it as the other guys, so it won't be a good result for me regardless. Will probably have some of my own on it though. It is a top chance. I do think there is a lot of fun for the value shoppers in this one.
Good luck!
Professor.

WHAB's Resident Tipsters Appalling Effort
Of the multiple bets placed by our team of 'experts' only the Captain bagged a winner on the Wests Tigers. Not afraid to win ugly is the Captain. And it really should have been a bigger thrashing if not for Manchester City making Fulham look like Manchester United in the final 20 minutes of their match. So JB and the Professor will be on punishment post duty this week...
In hindsight I should have hired a couple of snipers to take out Triple Honour and Pinnacles and then I would have had the Doncaster trifecta. But not to worry, the Sydney Cup is just around the corner...
